It Isn’t X, It Isn’t Y…..
Posted by: | CommentsI have noticed a lot of offers appearing lately that list a whole load of things that their opportunity is NOT. Things like “it’s not Google”, “It’s not affiliate products”, “it’s not MLM”…
One I saw yesterday had about 20 things that the opportunity was not!
So what’s the rationale behind this marketing approach? In other words, what problem are these people offering to solve for you?
My opinion is that there are a lot of people who have dabbled with things like Google AdWords, didn’t get the results they wanted, and have now dismissed it as something that doesn’t work. This is then multiplied by the number of people pushing systems based on AdWords (for example), creating more and more people convinced that particular system doesn’t work.
Now eventually, some of the people offering the AdWords (or other) systems will see take-ups slowing down, so people create other opportunities, based on some new system they have dreamed up, a new social site perhaps, or a new traffic exchange.
But to use an often quoted phrase – the people who are giving up on the original systems are leaving money on the table! These methods DO work, but like ANYTHING they only work if you have the right attitude, the right level of determination, and if you actually work the business as your particular system or guide is telling you.
Yeah I know there’s tales of instant millions, but did you REALLY expect that? There are people making good money online, who spent a while earning nothing, or earning $20 a month; but they kept developing themselves, they kept developing their business, and eventually it all clicked.
But I like the fact that these other offers are becoming more popular, and for one very good reason. If other companies and individuals are pushing these other systems, it means a lot of the “standard” ones are increasingly neglected, providing opportunities for people who truly “get it”.
Clouds, silver linings, you know how it works!

Busy Busy Busy
Posted by: | CommentsThings are getting very busy around here at the moment, and the pace is picking up as I get closer to launch date. Some fine-tuning remains to be done, some copy changes have been requested by ClickBank, and I have shifted a number of features onto the “version 2″ list.
It’s been a while since I’ve been involved in a software product release, and I have to admit – I had forgotten how much fun it is. Keep your eyes peeled for further news, over the next couple of weeks!

Avallach Technology
Posted by: | CommentsIt’s been a while since I gave Avallach Technology a blatant plug, so the recent overhaul of the web site is as good an excuse as any.
Re-positioning Avallach Technology as a solutions provider for the home-based online business entrepreneur, the new site now sports a new look, a new layout, and the tag line “Tools, Information and Opportunity”.
This is essentially what Avallach is about; providing simple, affordable tools for individuals, sharing information on how best to apply those tools, and advice/assistance regarding relevant opportunities.
If you’re building an online business, we don’t have the magic silver bullet to make you millions overnight, but we can certainly help lay the foundations for success.
Give Up Smoking
Posted by: | CommentsSome of you will already be aware that I gave up smoking in October last year, and I did so without using any of the patches, gums or other nicotine replacement therapies. I’m sure they work great for some people, but everyone’s different I guess.
It’s not an easy thing to do, and even if you’re not using a chemical-based solution to your addiction, it is worth looking at breathing exercises, meditation and other practices that can help you get through it all.
It’s my interest in the web, and the fact that packing in smoking is quite topical for me, that I decided to make that the subject of my latest blog mini-site.
The title of the blog comes from this useful product, but the blog itself ought to contain a lot of useful information for people in the middle quitting, thinking of quitting, or about to quit.
The blog is called “One Hour To Stop Smoking” and you can find it here
Whichever approach works for you, the very best of luck!

The Importance of Being Earnest
Posted by: | CommentsI got an email today, one of 100s, and like so many it started by asking me if I feel confused, asking if I feel the marketing “gurus” are conspiring to hinder me, rather than help me. As expected, it then went on to offer me the solution to this problem, a system that would put everything right; a silver bullet if you will.
Ladies and Gentlemen – there is NO silver bullet, not in terms of systems, businesses or programs at least. As with so many things in life, the answers and solutions are to be found within yourself. The fact is that all the legitimate systems (and even some of those that exist in legal “grey areas”) will work, IF YOU DO WHAT IS NEEDED.
OK, putting everything on the table for a moment, in addition to my own tools and information, yes I provide links and referrals for businesses and “systems”. But let’s step back a moment and take a more general view of things.
You’ve decided to make a change to your life, and have started working with an MLM company, selling memberships to one of the social sites that keep springing up, or affiliate marketing of someone else’s products. The problem is you’ve probably bought into some of the hype, you might be expecting to be earning big money very very shortly, and you’ve been led to expect to do very little work for that.
If that’s the case, the chances are you’ll be looking for the next “big opportunity” in a month, give or take a week or so. But that’s fine – It’s NOT YOUR FAULT. The way many of these opportunities are promoted sets an expectation, and an inadequate mindset – but that only harms one person; YOU. There are enough people out there to provide a solid revenue stream for these companies, even if the individuals concerned are ever-changing.
I’ve heard it said that you need to allow at least 90 days for one of these “business opportunities”, but seriously I believe that may well be designed to keep you paying your membership for 3 months, and no other reason.
90 days is a ‘comfortable’ period of time for most people, so it’s no surprise to see it used so often (I have also seen 60 days touted). Reality is you are going to have to work at your business for much longer than this, but I guess that doesn’t fit in with the “sign up now, get rich tomorrow” culture being peddled out there.
What really bothers me is that putting in the level of commitment needed IS worth it, and more people would enjoy success if the right expectations were established in their minds. Perhaps there is a perception that people don’t want to work at something, or maybe having people jumping around from business to business is actually very good for those who own the top level companies?
I don’t think there is a “magic” number of days, weeks or months you need to work a business. A lot will depend on how much time you can devote to it (most people have other jobs or family commitments), your level of experience, and the type of business, product or service involved. My take is that you stick with it for as long as it takes, as long as you ARE actively developing your business – let’s face it, you’re not going to get anywhere if you aren’t putting in any effort!
Still want a rule of thumb? OK, seeing as you forced me, let’s pick a round number of 1 year. If you baulked at the idea of spending 1 year building your business, then you seriously need to re-evaluate what it is you are trying to achieve. Maybe a better-paid job would work for you instead, or filling envelopes for a bit of extra cash. Developing a business is a different proposition entirely.
The time involved is of secondary importance, however. What REALLY matters is the state of your mind. Will you approach things methodically? Will you get organised? Will you PLAN to succeed? Most importantly, will you stick at it, refuse to have your attention grabbed by the “latest big thing”, and maintain a clear single-minded focus on your objective?
There’s your challenge for 2009 – make a real commitment to your business, and develop it in a serious, determined manner; in other words, BE EARNEST.
IF
Posted by: | CommentsWise words from Kipling…
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise
If you can dream–and not make dreams your master,
If you can think–and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings–nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And–which is more–you’ll be a Man, my son!

The Art of Boiling Water
Posted by: | CommentsTraffic, testing and tracking is both a science and an art-form; truly mastering the realm is a lifetime’s work for sure. But don’t despair, being effective in this area is within the reach of us mere mortals, and the best part is that the skills we will need, and develop, will stand us in very good stead in the more general context of online business.
A thorough examination of the steps and processes involved is well beyond the scope of this article, so I will limit myself to a brief look at what I consider to be the important mental tools, and how those relate to the wider context as well.
When you first approach the subject of “traffic”, it’s like the first time you dip your toes in the sea of online business opportunities; your head spins with questions like “where do I start?”, “Which of the millions of options should I use?”, “How do I use them?”, “Can SOMEBODY HELP ME??”
I think it’s fair to say, we’ve all been there – think of it as a form of initiation into the industry, a rite of passage!
The answer of course is simple. Just like your choice of business to pursue, pick one! But don’t just select an option, make a commitment to it, resolve to work with it fully, and not to give up halfway through.
A high-level view of the actual nuts and bolts would run something like:
- Create ad copy
- Put ad copy in front of target audience
- Track and measure results
- Make small changes, one at a time, repeating steps 2 and 3 with each change
- Arrive at an optimised version of the ad, time to post, subject line etc.
The “art” to this revolves around the ad content, and deciding on what to change. It will be a mixture of gut feeling, inspiration and experience. The good news is that there are plenty of effective ads that already exist, so you can mimic those to get started!
The bulk of the work is the “science”. More than anything else it is the “science” part that requires a degree of mental toughness. The tweak-track-measure-tweak feedback loop is, by it’s very nature, repetitive and monotonous. A little creative juice can be applied when making the small changes, but the process is a mechanical one that requires patience, focus, persistence and organisation.
Do you remember doing science lab experiments at school? I always remember the first one we did. We boiled water, measured the temperature at regular intervals as it cooled, and plotted the results on a graph. It wasn’t a complicated experiment, but it introduced a framework that was then used for every experiment thereafter. We had to be organised, we had to be methodical, we had to be observant, and we had to have the discipline to take readings at regular intervals.
This same methodical approach is used when working with your web page traffic, the same methodical approach also works in terms of developing your business. To summarise, the mental tools you will need include:
Patience – it takes time for the traffic data to come in, just as it takes time to build a business. In either case, if you are looking for instant gratification, then you will not see the results you desire.
Focus – an effective weapon against the sheer volume of options available. Whether you’re looking at a method to drive traffic, or a business, work with one at a time, work with it until it delivers results, and only then think about moving on to the next one. Build your traffic, or your business, one step at a time; chasing more than one rabbit at the same time, usually results in an empty net.
Persistence – not to be confused with patience, persistence is about having the resolve to keep going. The results WILL come, but you need to get over the early stages, when it feels nothing is happening. Persist and you will succeed, give up and you will not.
Organisation – there are no two ways about it, if you’re going to successfully track your results, measure the outcomes and analyse the numbers then you will need to be organised and methodical. Set up a tracking link for each permutation, use tools to record the details and the results (a pencil and notepad is fine), and be just as methodical as a scientist.
Obviously things do get easier with experience, and the most important thing you can do is to establish the habit. Once you establish the habit, things will start to roll along naturally.
Above all else, remember this; if you can boil water, then developing traffic that converts is well within your grasp.

3-Point Plan
Posted by: | CommentsPeople I know often say “you’re into that pyramid selling aren’t you?”, to which I invariably reply “not at all”. While there ARE pyramid schemes and various multi-level-marketing opportunities (some great, some not-so-great), people often don’t realise the potential of affiliate marketing, or even online marketing for your OWN products/services.
“Online Marketing” is a broad term, but the interesting thing is that the same processes, same disciplines, same skills, and same techniques can be applied to any offer. It is for this reason that there has been a growth in generic marketing systems, and generic marketing tools. While much of the marketing around these DOES focus on MLM opportunities, that is a reflection of what people are using them for, and not an indication of any limitation in their use.
A successful promotion will boil down to a handful of key components; a web page to capture leads, traffic being directed to the page, and conversion of leads into clients.
Now this is the point where ordinary people, looking to make a few extra dollars, start to have second thoughts. They may feel that the technology involved requires skills they do not have, they may have seen solutions that cost far more than their limited budget allows. But the reality is that these people are just one good piece of advice, or one guiding hand away from starting their own business, with an effective marketing campaign.
To illustrate this point, here is a plan that will bring traffic, provide your business with good leads, and earn that all important revenue. I call it a 3-point plan, primarily because there are 3 main components (well, 4 actually, if you include the actual product/service).
Before I go any further, I know there are “all in one” systems out there, that claim to provide everything from product through to client conversion. I am sure many of these are excellent, but there are potential issues to watch out for. Some of the systems have grown to the point where they start to become too complex (and you will learn that being lean and focused is the way to succeed), and also there is the issue that you are stuck with promoting whatever the system’s creators want you to promote. The inability to plug in a product or service that you wish to promote can be a real show-stopper.
The 3-point plan consists of generic components, that complement one another, can be applied to any online business, and also include some revenue earning aspects, without making things complicated.
1. Get Tooled Up – acquire tools to help monitor and organise your business activity
2. Lay Your Nets – set up a system to capture leads and convert them to clients
3. Send Prospects – drive traffic to your lead capture system
The 4th component is the product or service, but the prime objective is to pull suitable people into your marketing database. Unless you’re running on online shop, you’re unlikely to try and sell something right there and then. The fact is you may make some sales, but you will lose far more. The name of the game is to build your list of contacts and only try to make sales once you have a built something of a relationship with those people.
So that’s the overall blueprint, now let’s look at the components in more detail:
1. The Express Marketer Toolkit
Tracking your links, so you can see which adverts are working and which are not. While Express Marketer has a number of useful organisational tools, the key component here is the link tracking via ExpressURL. Simply create an ExpressURL link for each advertising activity you will conduct, use those links in the marketing copy, and then get feedback through the click-through count on each URL. As you get into the tracking and analysing habit, ExpressURL also includes support for Google Analytics, allowing complex analysis of your traffic via Google’s Analytics service.
Rather than showing your prospects a sales page, that they will either buy from or (more likely) navigate away from, the Network Marketing Machine provides generic landing pages that will intrigue and entice your prospects, offering them a free report in exchange for them providing their contact details. In addition to the free report, the Machine will send follow-up emails that help build a relationship with your new prospect.
The trick here is that the free report contains links to the main business opportunity that you wish to promote but, by the time your prospect clicks those links, they are already a prospect in your database.
This approach is less off-putting that the “foot in the door” method; building a list is such a vital part of business building that a phrase was coined to express this; “the money’s in the list”.
The Network Marketing Machine provides a non-agressive public face to your marketing and business-building activity, and takes care of a vital chunk of your business operation.
This system provides educational material and useful resources relating to traffic generation. If you do a search on terms like “web traffic” you will probably realise that a LOT of words have been written on this subject. A whole range of techniques exist to divert traffic to your site, and it is a lifetime’s work to be an expert in this field. The good news is that YOU don’t need to be an expert. By following the advice given in Guru University, and by using the recommended resources/techniques, you will build a steady flow of traffic.
In addition to the advice relating to traffic, Guru University provides some down-to-earth, no-nonsense advice which, if you are serious about achieving online success, you will do well to pay attention to!
So there you have it – a simple 3-point plan, that can be used to build any online business. Furthermore, while your own business is building, the components themselves can potentially earn you revenue. All 3 provide their own referral links, allowing you to resell the services for a healthy commission, simply by publishing those links.
It won’t get any easier than that, and it’s a combination I recommend to anyone; client, prospect, friend or family member alike.
I hope this proves to be of value to you.

p.s. If you’re still looking for the magic 4th component, a refreshingly new approach to Network Marketing is being taken by the Changing The World Together team.
Traffic is The Word of the Week
Posted by: | CommentsBy some fantastic coincidence (doesn’t it always happen that way?) I got myself wired up to a live video stream of a 3-day seminar, hosted by Carlos and Lupe Garcia. While there was a LOT of information, that left a lot of people’s heads spinning, this event triggered so many thoughts and ideas, and opened so many doorways in my mind, it was well worth the time spent.
These guys spend 100s of thousands on traffic generation, for multi-million dollar rewards, but this is still relevant to even the just-starting-out home marketer. Yeah, sure, you’re unlikely to grab their Traffic University membership in the first instance, and at over $900 per month this will undoubtedly get added to your “wish list” for when you’ve grown a little. But what they do, and what they teach – well I hadn’t heard of a lot of the terms they used, and that was invaluable on its own.
Knowing that something is there allows another option and opportunity to exist in your mind. You may not sign up now, but you can know where you are trying to get to, and visualise the kind of tools and techniques that will be needed. My thinking and knowledge have both expanded in useful ways!
In another twist, this fits neatly with something I have added into my personal business mix; both as a tool for my own use, and to round out the offers I make available to clients; primarily within the Express Marketer Toolkit.
The good news is that all of you who are thinking “I need to learn about traffic / marketing”, and who are also thinking “I am new to this and/or have a limited budget”, the boldly named Guru University puts clear, well-structured education and tools within the grasp of anyone who is serious about developing their business.
With a very down-to-earth approach, no use of science to blind you, and no punches pulled, you will learn, and master key strategies for driving traffic to your offers.
With the content you get, you definitely excellent value and at a very affordable price. Guru University really ought to be part of most people’s self-education plans!
